    The History of Ahwatukee

When Ahwatukee, Arizona first became a community there was not much need for auto glass. However, in today's world, a combination of an increasing number of vehicles on the road and rock landscaping, dominating the local terrain; stone damaged windshields have become commonplace and make Ahwatukee, AZ more susceptible to chipped, cracked or dinged windshields, than in cities in other parts of the country. Fortunately, when you are in need of auto glass repair or auto glass replacement, Arizona is a "no-fault-claim" state, which means placing an automotive glass claim will not directly affect your insurance rates. That is one less thing to worry about when choosing a professional auto glass company.

The Seattle Windshield Epidemic of 1954

April 15th, 1954, the city of Seattle was in a fearful frenzy and multiple communities in the area were caught in the grip of an unexplainable phenomenon. Pits, dings and tiny holes were appearing on the windshields of vehicles at an unexplainable rate.

    Photo: History Link

There were many theories as to how the windshield damage was spreading so fast. Some victims believed it had something to do with sand flea eggs, while others thought it was caused from H-Bomb Fallout. Police believed there was a team of vandlists committing the crimes.

The Phenomenon started in the Northwestern community of Bellingham. The first report came in and police thought perhaps buckshot or BB's could have damaged the windshield. The story made the press and within a week Police received another 25 reports of damaged windshields.

Reports made their way as far as Anacortes so local police set up a road block to prevent the windshield vandals from leaving the area. The road block did not work, as more reports filed in from the Whidbey Island Navel Air Station. 75 Marines carried out a 5 hour search of the station, to no avail, as they found nothing. There were now over 2,000 reports of windshield vandalism and it was clear that the epidemic was making it's way toward Seattle.

    Photo: Neatorama

Seattle residents heard of the of the phenomenon shortly before the first reports of damage in Seattle filed in. The morning newspaper told of the damages in Bellingham, Anacortes, and Oak Harbor, and by 6pm that evening the first report came in. Then another motorist reported damage to his windshield that night at 9pm. The next morning extra clerks were brought into the police stations to help answer phone calls, motorists were stopping police cars in the street to report the damage to their vehicles and even police vehicles were not immune to this phenomenon. By mid day, the windshield pitting had reached epidemic levels.

Dr. D. M. Ritter, a Chemist from the University of Washington cracked the case. He informed the police that this was all "tommyrot". He told police that this was all just hype caused from the media. "There isn’t anything I know of that could be causing any unusual breaks in windshields. These people must be dreaming!”.

Ritter was correct in his assumptions; this type of mass hysteria is called "Collective Dillusion".The most common attributes to a case of mass hysteria include ambiguity, the spread of rumors and false but plausible beliefs, mass media influence, recent geo-political events, and the reinforcement of false beliefs by authority figures.

Proper Windshield Replacement Creates Better Acoustics

As more automobiles use speech recognition to activate various devices, such as a GPS, a quiet ride becomes more important. The background noise that rushing air creates while driving with a windshield seal that is compromised, can distort any information a driver attempts to convey to these devices. Many of us have experienced frustration when we have held conversations with someone who is using a hands-free cell phone while driving. “What! Can you repeat that! Would you repeat that again!” The good news is we can replace the windshield and molding to the same quality as they were when the vehicle was manufactured.

There are three sources that create the excess noise in older vehicles; the noise generated by fluctuations in aerodynamic pressure around the windshield and the vehicle’s frame; the noise generated by tires rolling against the road’s surface; and the noise and vibration that generates when another vehicle passes close to our own. The amount of noise heard when another driver passes depends on the type of automobile driven. The noise that automobile tires make while in use varies depending on factors such as speed and the type of vehicle driven. It is muffled by the vehicle’s frame, carpeting, seats and other parts of the vehicle. Since the windshield has no protection from the wind, it takes the full impact. If there are any leaks in the seal between the windshield and the pinchweld, (the frame in which your windshield is adhered) it will be noticeable, especially at higher speeds.

    "Trivia Question"
Does sound travel faster through the air, water or glass?

    • a) Air
    • b) Water
    • c) Glass

Answer: c) The speed of sound varies depending on density and pressure, for the most part, the denser the object the faster sound will travel (air 768 mph) (water 3319 mph) (glass 8862 mph)
