History of the Windshield
Prior to the invention of windshields people used goggles to protect their eyes from bugs, dirt, wind and rain. In 1904, the windshield was invented but unfortunately with the first windshield came new problems. Upon impact or accident, the windshield would shatter allowing shards of glass to seriously injure or kill the occupants of the vehicle.
It was not until 1927 that vehicle manufacturers started using laminated windshields. This consisted of two pieces of plate glass with cellulose between them, greatly reducing the risk of serious injury or death in the event of an accident. At this point, the windshield was designed and manufactured with safety in mind.
With the invention of the first laminated windshields came new problems. Over time, the laminated windshield’s cellulose would discolor or get milky making it difficult to see through, if not impossible. In 1939 a new laminated windshield was manufactured that would not discolor or get milky; instead it would stay crystal clear.
Unfortunately, over the years at a great cost to human life the windshield still needed to undergo many improvements. Some of the best improvements were made in the strength and the adhesion quality of the windshield further reducing the amount of injuries and fatalities resulting from rollover accidents, head on collisions or road debris hitting the windshield.
Residents of Bouse, Cibola, Congress, and Dateland: A Sense of Relief
Currently windshields have attributes such as the ability to reduce heat buildup by reflecting the infrared light waves from direct sunlight and the ability to block-out 99% of the suns harmful ultra violet light. More importantly, your windshield can contribute as much as 60% to the support of the roof of your vehicle during a rollover accident. These are just some of the windshields innovative attributes. Who knows what the future holds? Perhaps a plasma shield and no glass at all!
